The Son of God on his throne with his angels Matthew 25:31

By Chad Daugherty

Matthew 7:22–23 (NIV)
22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and, in your name, perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

It’s interesting that in this scripture Jesus is addressing people who claimed to have done good works for Him, but Jesus says that he never knew them. Many people think they are on their way to Heaven because they do good things (serving in food kitchens, helping neighbors, giving to the poor, etc). While these are all good things, they will not get you into Heaven. These people also claim to know Jesus, thus the good works, but they are still lost. Even the demons know Jesus is real, but they are not saved. (Mark 1:21-27) So then, what does it take to be saved? Salvation is a free gift from God. There is nothing you need do except receive it through Jesus Christ by placing your faith and trust in Him. There are five identifying characteristics of someone who has truly embraced Jesus into their hearts. They are:

1. Confession of Faith.

Romans 10:9 says:
If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; If you are a Christian, then sometime in your life you have come before God and said, “Father…I’m a sinner! I believe that Jesus is your son and that He is the savior of the world. I confess my sin and I ask that you Jesus to forgive me and to come into my heart and life and be my Lord and savior”.

2. Change in the way you live.

1 John 2:29 says: If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone also who practices righteousness is born of Him. Also, 1 John 3:10 says By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God…. When the Holy Spirit lives in you……He begins a process in your life…. things begin to change: He starts to change your attitude, He convicts you of the things in your life that are not of God, He begins to open your eyes to things you didn’t see before, Little by little you begin to change…. you begin to realize you are being transformed! It’s a transformation that is from the inside out as God works in your heart.

3. Heart of Compassion. 1 John 4:7–8 says, Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8 The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love. When you become a Christian, you get God’s DNA and it should move you to show love and compassion for others.

4. Conflict with the world. 1 John 5:4 says, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. When you become a Christian, you take on a new enemy because you have joined another side…. another team…. satan no longer owns you! You are going to face resistance: Friends that ridicule your new faith, the enemy who tries to use your weaknesses to make you sin against God, etc. We all have a war going on…. our old nature against our new nature! However, as a Christian you trust God in your trials. Victory was won on the cross! (1 John 4:4) You simply need to fight the battles.

5. Change in Conduct. 1 John 3:9 says, No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. Also, 1 John 5:18 says, We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin….. Does this mean we have to be perfect? Absolutely not! Everyone will stumble in their walk, but those truly born again in Christ will be convicted by their sin, repent, and do their best not to repeat it. No one who purposely lives in sin knowing it is wrong is born of God. Sin breaks God’s heart and it should break yours if you are born again in Christ Jesus.

If these characteristics are not part of your life, they can be. Jesus is waiting with open arms for you to place your faith and trust in him… all you need do is ask with your heart!
