People are intrigued to know why people act the way they do, why cultures around the world are so different, and what causes these people to have such drastic differences. These types of questions have led to the scientific study of social interaction known as “Sociology”. Sociology is a blessing in gaining understanding of human behavior, but the process of socialization defined in Sociology can also be used by satan for evil. Let us take a look at how satan uses socialization to influence people and societies into deviant behavior.

Recently I was taking a course in Sociology. Sociology is the study of the development of human relationships. The course material discussed a process called socialization. As people interact with other people and groups they are influenced by those interactions. The process of socialization is what defines our behavior and personalities. Most interactions in the socialization process are good. For instance, school plays a prominent role in teaching children the norms of society. Churches play a big role in teaching morality. Children learn about love and boundaries in relationships through their family. As I pondered this subject, it occurred to me that there can also be a negative side to socialization. In 1933, Hitler formed the Nazi party in Germany. The Nazi party’s influence in society convinced a whole nation that they were a superior race that should rule the world. That thinking lead to an estimated 70-85 million deaths during World War II. In the Middle East the socialization process has taught certain sects of people that it is ok to kill anyone who is not Islamist. In fact, you are doing God a favor if you kill a Christian or a Jew. The Islamic culture also teaches that it is ok to have child brides where some girls as young as seven years old are married off to old men. All of the people mentioned in these examples were led to believe through the socialization process in their culture that these things were ok. Most of the world sees these things as deviant behavior which is another topic covered in my course. Sociology defines deviant behavior as people who do not conform to the norms of society. Sociology classifies deviant behavior as criminal and non-criminal and gives many reasons as to what draws people to commit deviant behavior. The reasons sociology gives to explain deviant behavior are very good and help us to understand things from the world’s perspective. However, I also see those things from a Biblical point of view. I see them as simply tools that satan uses to destroy people’s lives and to bring chaos into society. It is clear from scripture that satan uses people to influence other people. He used Eve to tempt Adam to eat the fruit (Gen. 3:6) Satan tempted Judas to betray Jesus (John 13:2). The scriptures even say that as people fall prey to satan’s influence they themselves will begin to influence others with deception (2 Tim. 3:13). While satan may use the socialization process to tempt people into committing deviant behavior, ultimately the root of the issue is mankind’s sinful nature. Because of the fall of mankind in the Garden of Eden, we all have fallen into sin and fall short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23). Everyday people struggle with their sinful nature (Rom 7:14-25), because we have an enemy who uses it against us to try and make us sin against God. When we become aware of how satan uses the Socialization process to entice us to rebel against God, then we can see things through they eyes of God and use discernment to reject the influences in our lives that are not of God (James 4:7).

While Sociology is blessing from God in understanding human nature and the socialization process, true understanding and victory over deviant behavior only becomes available when we surrender our hearts and lives to Jesus Christ (John 8:36).
